Le Havre, France after the bombing

result of allied bombing

The Allied bombers all but flattened the city of Le Havre. In this photo only a monument survived. The 528 pulled into the harbor in order to bring in supplies. Ships could not come into the docks because of the destruction. The first night three of us went into the city. We saw a small wooden building with lights on which looked like a bar. We opened the door and it was jam-packed with Frenchmen, and maybe some Germans. We shouldered our way to the bar and the place was silent. I ordered a Calvados. I drank it and said to my mates, "Let's get out of here, this is not a safe place."
