LST-528 on the beach


After we unloaded the 528, we became like a ferry boat going out to ships anchored offshore, bringing soldiers and equipment ashore. We also brought prisoners and many of the wounded back to cargo ships that transferred them to England. One day I went to where the prisoners were being held behind chicken wire fence. I was surprised by two things. 1. How young some of them looked. Some looked like they were twelve years old. 2. I was surprised to see so many Asians.
